Heritage & Culture

Living stories of the Karoo

Heritage & Culture in the Karoo is a living tapestry—shaped by generations of storytellers, farmers, artisans, and faith communities who call this vast land home. From age-old rock engravings and vernacular farm architecture to market-day recipes, music, and craft, we celebrate the traditions that root people to place. Sustainability here means keeping knowledge alive: supporting local makers and museums, honouring sacred sites, restoring historic buildings, and sharing language and customs with respect. By choosing community-led experiences, visitors help protect the Karoo’s cultural heartbeat—so that tomorrow’s families inherit not just memories, but a thriving way of life.

Wildlife & Nature Reserves

Wild heart, protected horizons

From star-washed skies to salt pans and koppies, the Karoo shelters rare and resilient life. Our Wildlife & Nature Reserves champion low-impact conservation across fragile biomes—protecting habitats for species like the elusive riverine rabbit, wide-roaming antelope, raptors, and vital river corridors. By choosing guided walks, ethical wildlife viewing, and community-run reserves, visitors help restore landscapes, fund local rangers, and safeguard biodiversity. Travel lightly, keep to tracks, and leave only footprints—so the Karoo’s wild heart can beat strong for generations.

The reserve encompasses 12,000 ha of conservation area, including the Zeekoei River, the largest tributary of the Orange River.

Activities

The reserve is situated adjacent to Petrusville and Vanderkloof, on the Southern bank of the Vanderkloof dam.

Activities

Chargo Reserve lies only 30km from Colesberg, making it a quick escape into nature that is not too far from the comforts of town.

Activities

The reserve is located near the Seekoei River and prioritises conservation, particularly of hippos, very highly.

Activities

Mokala is SANParks’s newest reserve and is located approximately 70km south-southwest of Kimberley.
